Shipping it the long way round

Over 9,000 miles, 6 to 10 weeks at sea, sealed in a container and insured the whole way. Here is how it goes.

Collected anywhere, shipped from the nearest port

We collect the car from wherever it is: your driveway, a dealer, an auction yard. Our transport partners in Australia take it to the closest sensible port, where it is loaded into a container.

Most cars leave from one of the big container ports on the right. If yours is somewhere remote, we plan the route and tell you how it will get there.

Half a world away

Pick a port to see how far it is from our site, in a straight line.

Castle Donington
As the crow flies 10,560 miles Sydney to Castle Donington

Straight-line distances, worked out from the map. A ship cannot fly, so the real crossing is longer, and takes around 6 to 10 weeks.

Two ways to travel

Shared container

The usual choice.

Your car shares a container with other cars we are bringing over for customers, so you share the cost. It is loaded and strapped by specialists at the Australian port and is normally opened by our team in Castle Donington, unless customs choose to inspect it first.

  • The most cost-effective way across
  • Sealed and secured for the whole voyage
  • Unloaded at our own site, not at the port

A 20ft to itself

On request.

If you would rather the car travelled alone, or you are moving here and want room for belongings, we can book a dedicated 20ft container. It costs more than a shared space, but the container is yours alone.

  • Nobody else’s car alongside
  • Room for your belongings if you are relocating
  • Same insurance, same handling at this end

6 to 10 weeks

On the water

Our usual range for Australian shipments. Vessels, routing and port congestion move it either way.

£450

Repair excess

Marine insurance for the whole crossing, with total loss covered at the full purchase value.

Packing belongings in the car

If you are moving to the UK, you can ship your own things inside the car.

  • Make a valued inventory. Everything inside is declared at customs, so we need a list with a value against each item.
  • Secure it. Anything loose can move in transit. Pack it low and pack it tight.
  • Leave some things behind. A few items cannot travel by any method. Ask us before you pack if you are unsure.
  • Moving a lot? A dedicated 20ft container gives you far more room than a shared space.

Shipping questions

How long does shipping from Australia take?

Usually 6 to 10 weeks on the water. That figure comes from hundreds of Australian shipments, but it moves with vessel availability, routing and the UK port. The whole job, door to door, is around 10 to 16 weeks.

Why containers rather than roll-on roll-off?

For a crossing this long, we prefer a container for the safety and security it gives, and sharing one is also the most cost-effective. The car is loaded and secured by specialists who do it all the time, and it is normally opened by our team at our site, unless customs choose to inspect it first.

Is my car insured at sea?

Yes. We cover it with marine insurance for the whole crossing. A total loss is covered at the full purchase value, and repairs for any damage carry a £450 excess.

Do I pay port storage when it lands?

We bring the container back to our own site in Castle Donington and unload it there, so it does not sit at the port racking up storage charges while it waits for someone.
